(May 13 2020) – RX-M Managing Partner, Randy Abernethy, will be presenting at the Apache Roadshow Chicago and at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe. Topics covered by these talks include:

  • Deploying Cassandra on Kubernetes
  • Using Apache Thrift to solve issues for microservice-based applications in the finance industry
  • A comprehensive look at a developer’s toolkit made of CNCF projects.

Apache Roadshow Chicago – May 13-14, 2019

Abernethy’s two talks in Chicago are part of the Fin-Tech track on the second day of the Apache Roadshow.

The first talk is a case study: “Building a One Million QPS Cassandra DBaaS Solution on Kubernetes” which details the Kubernetes-based Cassandra solution used at State Street, a leading financial services provider. Yekesa Kosuru from State Street will be joining Abernethy for the presentation; Kosuru is a thought leader in the big data and analytics space with decades of experience with Large Scale systems, Databases, and Key-Value systems. Together, they will discuss the architecture of the solution, the benefits of dynamically deployed and scaled Cassandra clusters, and the challenges faced during the adoption process.

In the second talk, Abernethy draws from his extensive experience in the finance industry and his knowledge as an Apache Thrift maintainer to discuss “Building high-performance microservices in finance with Apache Thrift.”  Organizations in the performance-sensitive capital markets and banking environments can benefit greatly from decomposing monolithic applications into microservices. However, an application can quickly run into performance and resource problems without proper communications. This technical presentation will include practical examples to demonstrate how Apache Thrift can solve common issues faced by microservice-based endeavors.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Barcelona – May 20-23, 2019

The following week, Abernethy will be in Barcelona to lead one of six tutorials at KubeCon CloudNativeCon Europe. His tutorial will take attendees through the tools and processes needed to build and manage a working microservices application. For a full cloud native developer experience, only projects from the CNCF software stack will be used. Projects used range from graduated projects like Kubernetes and Envoy to widely-used incubating projects like Helm and gRPC.
