Containers and Kubernetes for Developers trains developers to build, configure, and ship applications on Kubernetes. Attendees package applications as container images and express requirements as declarative Kubernetes manifests. They design workloads that run reliably in a dynamically orchestrated environment, work that feeds downstream CI/CD pipelines and AI-integrated production services. Developers and application engineers leave with the skills to build and operate applications on any Kubernetes-based platform.

The course begins with container image creation, covering Dockerfile best practices, layered filesystems, and image registries. Attendees then deploy their containers onto Kubernetes, learning about Kubernetes Pod design patterns, including multi-container patterns for sidecar, ambassador, and adapter workloads. Application configuration comes next, using ConfigMaps, Secrets, and the Downward API. Finally, coverage of controllers like Deployments, Jobs, and CronJobs helps developers learn about how to keep their workloads running within expectations.

Networking and packaging coverage come next through Services, Ingress, and Helm charts, so attendees learn to expose and distribute applications for reuse. Custom Resources and the Kubernetes API extend the platform further, letting applications integrate directly with Kubernetes itself. Observability, debugging, and autoscaling round out the course, along with integrating deployments into CI/CD pipelines.

Through lecture and lab work, attendees build, configure, and deploy real applications on Kubernetes. They move from first principles through production-ready patterns, with equal attention to debugging, observability, and delivery automation. By completion, attendees can build, package, and support cloud-native applications running on Kubernetes.

Who Should Attend

Developers, Application Engineers, Backend Engineers, Full-Stack Developers

What Attendees Will Learn

Upon completing Containers and Kubernetes for Developers, attendees will be able to:

  • Build Container Images using Dockerfiles and image-building best practices
  • Package Applications for Kubernetes using declarative YAML manifests
  • Design Multi-Container Pods using sidecar, ambassador, and adapter patterns
  • Configure Applications using ConfigMaps, Secrets, and the Downward API
  • Deploy and Roll Back Applications using Kubernetes Deployments
  • Schedule Batch Workloads using Jobs and CronJobs
  • Expose Applications using Services and Ingress resources
  • Package and Release Applications using Helm charts
  • Extend Kubernetes using Custom Resources and the Kubernetes API
  • Debug and Troubleshoot Applications running in Kubernetes clusters
  • Implement Observability including logging, metrics, and distributed tracing
  • Scale Applications automatically using Horizontal Pod Autoscaling
  • Integrate Kubernetes Deployments into CI/CD pipelines
  • Apply Cloud-Native Design Principles to build resilient, portable applications

Prerequisites

Basic programming or scripting proficiency and Linux command-line familiarity are required; attendees unfamiliar with Python should complete “RX-M Python Foundation for Developers” first. No prior Kubernetes experience is required.

Delivery

Available for Instructor-Led (ILT) in-person/onsite training or Virtual Instructor-Led training (VILT) delivery.

Each attendee will require the ability to ssh into a cloud hosted virtual machine (provided with the course). In environments where SSH is not possible, local lab VMs or browser accessible lab systems can be provided. For web-based delivery, participants require an Internet-connected computer capable of teleconferencing.
