Development with Yocto Project is an intensive, three-day, hands-on course that teaches experienced embedded Linux engineers how to repeatably build an embedded Linux system. Attendees learn how to use the Poky and BitBake build process — with its recipes and layers — to customize the Linux kernel and packages for a custom embedded application.
The course covers how to build Linux on an embedded board, how to use emulators for verification, how to create board support packages (BSPs) for target hardware, and more. Through extensive lab work, attendees gain the skills and methods needed to create and maintain custom Linux-based systems for embedded products regardless of hardware architecture.

What Attendees Will Learn
This course is designed to prepare attendees to take advantage of the Yocto Project — its templates, tools, and methods — to create and maintain custom Linux-based systems for embedded products regardless of hardware architecture. Learning modules include:
- The Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, Poky, and BitBake
- Setting up the Yocto build system and building an emulation image
- Troubleshooting build failures and customizing images
- Adding packages, working with layers, and kernel recipes
- Development tools, BBCLASSes, and licensing and compliance
- The Kbuild system and cross-development toolchains
- Booting a target development board and target filesystem packaging
- Root filesystem choices, right-sizing, and decoding existing Yocto implementations
Prerequisites
This course assumes you have basic knowledge of embedded Linux systems such as building and installing boot loaders, kernels, and user space software. You should also be familiar with building code from the command line, basic Linux utilities, and text editors. Some experience with Python is helpful but not required., and text editors.
