Model Context Protocol (MCP) Observability and Security with Linkerd
Model Context Protocol (MCP) Observability and Security with Linkerd explores how Linkerd enhances both observability and security for systems that rely on MCP, giving participants a practical, architecture-level understanding of how MCP traffic flows through a service mesh. The course begins by outlining the MCP wire protocol and its JSON-RPC–based interactions and auth approach, establishing the foundation needed to reason about MCP-driven workloads in a mesh environment. Building on this, the course dives into Linkerd’s lightweight observability stack, micro-proxy design, transparent instrumentation, and metrics pipeline, to explain how Linkerd collects, aggregates, and visualizes MCP observability data without application changes.
Participants will learn how Linkerd’s approach to metrics and real-time service health reporting empowers deeper insight into MCP request patterns and performance. The course then shifts to security, demonstrating how Linkerd’s identity system, automatic mutual TLS, and policy engine provide fine-grained, zero-trust security controls which can be tailored specifically to MCP traffic. Upon completion, attendees will have a solid understanding of how Linkerd enhances both observability and security for MCP-driven workloads.
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of MCP observability and security with Linkerd including:
- Outline the MCP wire protocol and its JSON RPC interactions
- Understand the observability function in service mesh architectures
- Explain how Linkerd collects and visualizes MCP observability data
- Configure Linkerd Authorization policies for MCP traffic
