Developing Microservices for Kubernetes immerses developers, DevOps staff, and other technology professionals in microservices and the Kubernetes microservice environment across five intensive, hands-on days. Day one lays the core concepts: a microservice overview covering benefits and challenges, and API-based communication built on HTTP verbs and interface contracts. Attendees also work with container packaging using Docker images and Dockerfiles, and RPC-based communication comparing IDL-driven approaches such as Apache Thrift and gRPC.

Day two turns to managing state. Attendees study messaging patterns, including pub/sub and streaming with brokers such as Amazon SQS and Apache Kafka. They then work through cloud native transactions, covering the CAP theorem and eventual consistency. The Saga pattern also appears, in both its choreography and orchestration forms, along with event sourcing. Polyglot persistence follows, comparing relational and NoSQL state managers. The day closes with brownfield migration, applying domain-driven design and bounded contexts to decompose monoliths into microservices.

Day three moves into orchestration, comparing platforms before diving into Kubernetes architecture, Pods, and Deployments. Attendees then roll out applications using labels, selectors, and health checks. Kubernetes Services, networking, and Ingress round out service discovery, and the day finishes with gateways and service meshes, including hands-on work with Istio. Day four examines observability, covering log management and metrics and autoscaling with the Horizontal and Vertical Pod Autoscalers. The day also covers service mesh tracing with Istio and Envoy.

Day five closes the course with software delivery pipelines and advanced deployment models such as canary and dark releases. Attendees also cover GitOps principles and tooling, along with software supply chain security practices for defending microservice systems against modern threats. Attendees leave with a clear understanding of microservices and hands-on experience across every lab. They finish ready to design and develop effective microservice-based applications on this platform.

Who Should Attend

Developers, Architects, Release Engineers, Engineering Managers and DevOps personnel

What Attendees Will Learn

Upon completing Developing Microservices for Kubernetes, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain microservice architecture principles and communication patterns, including APIs, RPC, and messaging
  • Package microservices using containers and Dockerfiles
  • Apply cloud native transaction patterns, including Sagas and event sourcing
  • Design stateless services using polyglot persistence
  • Apply brownfield migration strategies to decompose monoliths
  • Orchestrate microservices using Kubernetes Pods, Deployments, and Controllers
  • Configure Kubernetes Services, networking, and Ingress
  • Apply gateway and service mesh patterns, including Istio
  • Apply observability practices, including logging, metrics, and tracing
  • Build software delivery pipelines and apply GitOps and advanced deployment models
  • Apply software supply chain security best practices

Prerequisites

Because the course focuses on microservice design and development, no particular programming language expertise is required. Attendees should, however, have experience with at least one programming language.

Delivery

Available for Instructor-Led (ILT) in-person/onsite training or Virtual Instructor-Led training (VILT) delivery.

Each attendee will require the ability to ssh into a cloud hosted virtual machine (provided with the course). In environments where SSH is not possible, local lab VMs or browser accessible lab systems can be provided. For web-based delivery, participants require an Internet-connected computer capable of teleconferencing.
