Rego Policy Language gives sysadmins, security professionals, developers, and other technical staff a comprehensive introduction to Rego and its use in policy definition. The course opens by covering the fast-moving policy space, describing where Rego and Open Policy Agent (OPA) fit into the landscape. Each module splits into lecture and lab components, committing at least 50% of the time to hands-on work.

Attendees begin writing Rego assertions and working with OPA in the first lab. They then learn to define declarative policies ranging from basic to advanced as the course progresses. Day one moves from writing rules and the OPA document model, covering scalars, collections, and objects. It then covers resolving rule conflicts with conditions, assignment, and membership expressions. The day closes with iteration across arrays, sets, and objects using every, some, and or-type constructs. Day two builds on that foundation with collections, comprehensions, and partial definitions, then introduces both built-in and user-defined functions for reusable policy logic.

Advanced topics follow, including with expressions, self joins, future.keywords, and metadata for documenting and scoping policies. The course also covers nonfunctional requirements, closing with the Rego tool ecosystem, linting, monitoring, and performance tuning as part of a broader best-practices discussion. By the end, attendees are ready to work with real-world policies in a production setting. Every lecture module pairs directly with a lab. Attendees write and test their own rules from the first session onward instead of only watching demonstrations.

What Attendees Will Learn

Upon completing Rego Policy Language, attendees will be able to:

  • Write basic and advanced Rego language policies
  • Work with the OPA document model, scalars, collections, and objects
  • Apply iteration techniques across arrays, sets, and objects
  • Use Rego collections, comprehensions, and partial definitions
  • Write and use built-in and user-defined Rego functions
  • Apply advanced Rego features, including with expressions and self joins
  • Test and lint Rego policies
  • Apply Rego best practices for monitoring and performance tuning

Prerequisites

General technology background.

Delivery

Available for Instructor-Led (ILT) in-person/onsite training or Virtual Instructor-Led training (VILT) delivery.

Each attendee will require the ability to ssh into a cloud hosted virtual machine (provided with the course). In environments where SSH is not possible, local lab VMs or browser accessible lab systems can be provided. For web-based delivery, participants require an Internet-connected computer capable of teleconferencing.
