Linux Container Technology and Container Runtimes gives attendees a solid introduction to Linux container technology. Attendees also learn the key runtime systems, containerd, rocket, and runC/libcontainer, over two hands-on days. The course begins with the core Linux container features, CGroups and Namespaces, along with the other kernel features that runtimes rely on. Day two then covers the most important runtime systems in turn, including Docker, containerd, and CRI-O, comparing the features and architecture of each. Hands-on labs reinforce every topic throughout.
Day one’s CGroups and Namespaces modules break down the exact kernel primitives that every runtime builds on. These are control groups for resource limits and namespaces for isolation. Students then see how OCI, runC, and libcontainer standardize how those primitives get invoked.
On day two, the Docker module examines its daemon architecture. The containerd module then has attendees drive the ctr CLI directly against the runtime Docker itself relies on internally. The CRI-O module repeats that pattern with the crictl CLI. This shows how a Kubernetes-focused runtime implements the same Container Runtime Interface differently than containerd does. The closing module surveys additional containerizers across the ecosystem, giving attendees criteria for evaluating options beyond the few covered hands-on in class. By the end, students have a deep understanding of Linux container technology and the runtimes that power today’s most popular orchestration systems.
