RESTful Web Services with JAX-RS/Jersey introduces architects and Java developers to the JAX-RS RESTful web service standard and the Jersey reference implementation. Attendees learn how to develop Java-based REST services in a hands-on environment. The course covers the full range of JAX-RS REST annotations, including paths, parameter types, media types, and HTTP verbs. Day one moves from core REST concepts and the JAX-RS standard into building a first Jersey service project, then works through paths, HTTP verbs, and parameter types before finishing with media types and content negotiation, the mechanism clients and servers use to agree on a response format.
The course progresses from basic hello-service project construction through to the design of complex resources, sub-resource locators, asynchronous operations, and more. Practical construction topics come paired with tips, best practices, and RESTful service design guidance throughout. Attendees also examine MOXy-based automatic conversion of POJOs to and from JSON and XML media types, along with manual entity reading and writing operations, comparing the hand-written approach against MOXy’s automatic conversion so they understand both the mechanism and the convenience layer built on top of it. The asynchronous operations module shows how to keep a Jersey service responsive under load without blocking request-handling threads. By the end, attendees are ready to start developing RESTful services in Java immediately.

What Attendees Will Learn
Upon completing RESTful Web Services with JAX-RS/Jersey, attendees will be able to:
- Explain the JAX-RS RESTful web service standard and the role of the Jersey reference implementation
- Build and deploy a basic JAX-RS service project
- Apply the full range of JAX-RS annotations for paths, parameter types, media types, and HTTP verbs
- Design complex resources and sub-resource locators
- Implement asynchronous JAX-RS operations
- Convert POJOs to and from JSON and XML automatically using MOXy
- Perform manual entity reading and writing operations
- Apply RESTful service design best practices
Prerequisites
Each student should have practical Java programming experience prior to taking this course. Familiarity with basic web and HTTP concepts is beneficial but not required.
