Tomcat Foundation gives attendees an in-depth, three-day, hands-on understanding of configuring and operating Apache Tomcat. Day one opens with an overview of the server’s architecture and how requests flow through it. It then moves into basic operations such as installation, setup, and general server management. Attendees use the web application deployer to push a real application onto the server. They close the day exploring the Manager web app, the built-in console for starting, stopping, and monitoring deployed applications. Tomcat security takes over on day two, starting with access control and realms. Realms are the mechanism Tomcat uses to authenticate and authorize users against a directory or database.
The Java Security Manager module follows, restricting what a deployed application is permitted to do. Attendees then configure TLS for encrypted traffic and work with reverse proxies sitting in front of Tomcat in production. Core production features come into focus on day three. Attendees work with the Java Naming and Directory Interface and Java Database Connectivity to wire applications up to directories and databases. They then move into Java Server Pages alongside server-side includes and CGI features for building dynamic content. A module on connectors and virtual hosting shows how a single Tomcat instance can serve multiple sites. The course closes with clustering and load balancing, so attendees can scale a deployment across several nodes. A hands-on lab follows every module, giving attendees the practical experience needed to operate production Tomcat servers safely and efficiently.
