Value Stream Mapping teaches technical staff to map, analyze, and improve how work actually flows from request to delivery, over two intensive days. The technique analyzes the current state of a process, then designs an improved future state. Day one opens with an overview, then moves into a module on processes and products. Attendees learn to distinguish the work items flowing through a stream from the systems that handle them. From there, the class builds current-state maps of a real process, capturing every handoff and delay. The class then constructs future-state maps that show what the process should look like once waste is removed.
Day two shifts to analyzing for customer value. Attendees learn to separate steps that matter to the customer from those that exist purely for internal convenience. A module on building and communicating the plan gives attendees practice pitching a proposed future state to leadership and other stakeholders. A module on measuring for progress and success covers the metrics teams use to confirm an improvement actually stuck. The course closes with related techniques and tools, including capacity modeling for deeper analysis. Hands-on labs give attendees practical experience mapping and improving a real value stream. Relatable process examples make it easy to see how the thinking applies to software delivery, IT operations, or other workflows. Eight modules span the two days, each paired with lab work. Attendees leave with skills they can apply directly to their own organization’s processes.
Who Should Attend
Developers, IT and QA Staff, Technical Managers, DevOps and SRE personnel
What Attendees Will Learn
Upon completing Value Stream Mapping, attendees will be able to:
- Explain the fundamentals of value streams and value stream mapping
- Visualize a value stream to reveal how work actually flows from request to delivery
- Architect value streams for existing and future-state processes
- Apply planning considerations when designing improved value streams
- Communicate value stream findings and plans effectively to leadership
- Measure outcomes and track progress against value stream goals
- Model value streams for deeper analysis, including capacity modeling
Prerequisites
No prior experience with value stream mapping is required. General familiarity with software delivery, IT operations, or another operational process is helpful, since attendees will map a process of their choosing during the course.
